Program Outline - Initiation

TIM BITS HOCKEY

In conjunction with Hockey Edmonton and Knights of Columbus Hockey, St Matthew Hockey will be offering both Initiation I and Initiation II this upcoming season.

Initiiation I is once per week for kids learning to skate, or just learning to play hockey for the first time. Initiation II is a twice per week program for kids who are more comfortable on their skates and are ready to learn more about the FUNdamentals of hockey. Initiation II will consist of one practice and one organized game per week.

The St. Matthew Initiation Hockey program will concentrate on teaching the young players several aspects of the game of hockey. Besides having fun and learning good sportsmanship, the players will be taught the following:

Skating

  • Balance

  • Stationary and Mobile Stretching

  • Ready Position

  • T-Push/Gliding

  • Scooting

  • Forward Stride

  • Front Start

  • Edge Control

  • Control Turns

  • One Foot Stop

  • Backward Stance

  • Backward Start (C-Cut)

  • Backward Skating

  • Lateral Movement

Puck Control

  • Stance

  • Stationary Puck Handling (Puck Sweep)

  • Skating With Puck

  • Turning With Puck

Passing

  • Forehand Sweep Pass

  • Backhand Sweep Pass

Shooting

  • Wrist Shot

  • Backhand

  • Shooting On The Move

Checking

  • Sweep Check

  • Lift The Stick Check

Goalkeeping

  • Stance

  • Parallel Shuffle

  • Stick Save - goalies should NOT be told to lay on the ice; stretched out position may expose the neck area.

Team Play

Positions can be introduced later part of the season; beneficial to players moving to Novice in the following year.
